Congratulations to Donie McKeon who has won the 2017 North West Limousin Show Team Points Title.
He finished on 93 points and was well ahead of the chasing pack, which was headed up by Michael Gunn on 62. Jack Vahey took the third place prize with 57 points. Michael Oliver won the prize for “Best Single Animal” and John Moore won the prize for “Best Pair From Breeder not in the Top Three”. Strokestown Show took place in the beautiful surroundings of Strokestown Park House on Saturday last, September 9th.
Judging the Limousin classes on the day was Gareth McGuinness from County Louth. The Limousin Breed Champion was Milan Lindie, an Ampertaine Foreman heifer from the herd of Donie McKeon from Enniscrone Co. Sligo. Elphin Show hosted the annual North West Limousin Club Calf Championships on Saturday last, September 2nd.
A large entry of quality stock competed in six Calf classes with the overall winner presented with the Michael Dale Cup. The club area contains four counties Roscommon, Galway, Mayo and Sligo and all were represented in the prize winners. Judge for the day was Mr James Callion from Co. Tyrone. James and his wife Alison run the Melbreak Limousin herd are regular exhibitors in Carlisle. The show was all indoor, with judging taking place in the custom built showing ring at Elphin Mart. The calves attending are listed in age order and divided into three equal classes in both the male and female sections. Between the Calf finals and the open classes over 30 Limousins were presented at the Show.
Jack Vahey’s heifer Madonna was a popular winner of the Michael Dale Cup for the Champion Calf. This March 17 Heifer is sired by Plumtree Fantastic and was also reserve Limousin champion of the show behind Eoin Hester’s senior cow Meelickaduff Honda. Honda is no stranger to success in Elphin having been Calf Champion and breed champion in Elphin Shows in previous years. She also was crowned National Champion at Tullamore show last month.

Tullamore Show & AIB National Livestock Show is the Premier Livestock Show in Ireland and attracts breeders of quality cattle and sheep from all over the country.
The Irish Limousin Cattle Society returned to Tullamore for the 28th National show having held the show in conjunction with the International Limousin Congress in Kilkenny last year. This year 105 outstanding Limousin cattle competed in 18 classes. Judging started at 10am, with the large crowd of spectators, three deep, enthralled by the spectacle of fantastic cattle on display.
Judging responsibilities for this prestigious show was Ms. Kirree Kermode of the Orrisdale pedigree herd based in Ballasalla, Isle of Man. Kirree has shown and judged pedigree Livestock for a number of years.
The North West Limousin Club was well represented and had many successes including the overall champion Meelickaduff Honda owned by Eoin Hester from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

Meelickaduff Honda ET exhibited by Owen Hester, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Honda is a daughter of Wilodge Vantastic and the noted french donor dam Etole (who has bred numerous champions for the Ardnacrusha herd of Donal Moloney). No stranger to the show ring, Honda holds the RDS Champion of Champions title for 2016. Born in December 2012, she has enjoyed a very successful showing career since the summer of 2013. For the last two years she has competed in the Senior cow classes, last year with her 2016 born son Meelickaduff Lamborghini, while this year she has her 2017 born son Meelickaduff Massey at foot.

Breeders from the North West Limousin club area had a very successful day in Roscrea at the Premier sale held on March 6th.
North West Limousin Club Bulls won four of the 12 classes including Junior champion and also achieved three of the top prices in the sales ring. The showing segment was held the evening before the Sale and the judge was Mr. Hefin Jones of the noted Garnedd herd in Wales. The sale met with a clearance rate of 76% and a price range from €10,800 to €1,900, averaging €3,750.
Claiming the Junior Champion rosette was “Cappaduff Lorenzo” a Loosebeare Fantastic son from Joe and Jennifer Moran, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Lorenzo is no stranger to rosettes having been very successful on the show scene in 2016. Amongst his successes were North West Calf Champion 2016 and Overall Reserve Junior Male Champion at the International Limousin Congress.
Lorenzo caught the eye of the judge – Hefin Jones and was duly purchased for the Garnedd herd for €6,000. Lorenzo’s price was the fourth highest on the day.
“Bos Luke” an Ampertaine Commander son bred by Joe Collins, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Roscommon sold for €6,200 the third highest price on the day. Joe had a great day for his first visit to Roscrea selling bull with his second bull Bos Koe selling for €5,500. Koe is an On-dit son out of a Cerberus cow.
Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway parted with “Millburn Knowledge” for €5,100. Knowledge is a son of Fieldson Alfy and the Mas Du Clo daughter Millburn Vera and placed second in his class.
Peter Holland, Clones, Co. Monaghan purchased 18 month old Knowledge.
Jimmy Ryan, Pallasgreen, Co. Limerick purchased third prize winner “Liverpool Kian” from Michael Graham, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
Kian has Kaprico Eravelle, Cloughhead Ernie and Shire Milton in his lineage. €4,600 was his purchase price.
The Wilodge Cerberus son “Millburn Knightsbridge” sold for €4,200. Knightsbridge was bred by Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway. His dam is the Sympa daughter Millburn Felicity.
Knightsbridge was purchased by Desmond Fulton, Ballymoney, Co. Antrim.
The Kaprico Eravelle son “Liverpool Kenny 2” sold for €4,100. Kenny was bred by Michael Graham, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He has five star ratings in most traits.
John Power, Carrick on Suir Co. Waterford acquired third prize winning Kenny.
Bertie Mannion, Curraghboy, Co. Roscommon sold “Ballyline Kalvin” for €4,000. Kalvin has Gleannari Everest, Mas Du Clo and Oakley Politician in his sire stack. A UK based customer purchased this first prize winner.
The Neuf son “Meelickaduff Kopiliot” sold for €4,000 to James Clifford, Caherciveen, Co. Kerry. Kopiliot was bred by Michael Hester, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
Placed fourth in his class he had been shown in 2016, amongst his successes was first prize at the North West Club Calf Finals in Glenamaddy at the International Limousin Congress event.

The North West Limousin Club is delighted to announce a revamped Herds Competition which includes extra categories and aims to maximise participation.
The competition is confined to paid up members of the North West Limousin Club, which caters for breeders with a herd number in counties Roscommon, Sligo, Mayo and Galway. Membership costs €20 for the year.
The 2017 Herds Competition includes a number of individual competitions where the breeder does not have to enter the entire herd. We expect to have the competition between mid August and mid September; date and venue TBC.
The three size categories are (categories may be subdivided depending on entries)
Small herd Best herd with five or less Cows. Medium herd Best herd with between six and twelve Cows Large Herd Best herd with over 13 Cows Overall North West Limousin Herd of the Year – selected from the winners of the three categories Novice prize Best herd any size that is competing in the Competition for the first time
Special categories are as follows:
A) Best Group Of Calves Born After 1/9/16 (Confined To Herd Competition Entrants) B) Best Group Of Heifers Born Prior To 1/9/2016 (Confined To Herd Competition Entrants) C) Best Progeny Of One Sire (minimum 3 Calves) (Confined To Herd Competition Entrants) D) Best Cow Family (three Generations Minimum) (Confined To Herd Competition Entrants) E) Best 2016 Heifer, F) Best Cow, G) Best 2016 Bull, H) Best Bull Born Before 1/1/2016 All herds in the competition are automatically eligible for any of the special categories. The last four categories listed above (E,F,G,H) are open to any eligible breeder to enter individually. (i.e. no need to enter the entire herd).

Note: If entering the Herd competition all pedigree Limousin cattle must be presented to the Judge for inspection. If entering an individual bull, heifer or cow (Sections E,F,G,H) then only that animal needs to be presented.
The North West Limousin Calf Championship returns to Elphin Show on September 2nd. Showing will take place in the custom built indoor arena which is attached to the Elphin Mart complex.
The North West Limousin Club area is confined to breeders with herd numbers in Co. Roscommon, Sligo, Mayo and Galway. To be eligible to compete in the calf finals a breeder must be a paid up member of the club which costs €20.
All pedigree registered Limousin calves born after 1/9/2016 are eligible to enter. When the exhibitors attend the show the bull and heifer exhibits will each be divided into three separate classes based on age. In the event of a number attending not being divisible by three the extra animal/animals will be put in the older class. Prize money for the competition is 1st €75, 2nd €50 and 3rd €25. Entry fee is €10 The winner of each class will compete for champion Limousin calf and the prestigious Michael Dale Memorial Cup. The Michael Dale Memorial Cup was first presented in 2011 by the North West Limousin Club in memory of Michael who passed away in 2010. Michael was a past Club Chairman and National Council Rep for the Club and an advocate of all things Limousin.

The Annual General Meeting of the North West Limousin Club will be held this Saturday, 21st January, at 8.30pm in The McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris.
The presentation of Herd Competition prizes will also be made on the night and a video of the ILC 2016 Glenamaddy Show will be displayed. Refreshments served.
A reminder that deposits for the 2017 North West Limousin Club trip to Limoges, France are due by January 31st. The trip is set to take place from June 28th to July 2nd. It will include visits to test centres and farms. The cost will be approximately €450. Deposit of €250 to be paid to Michael Gunn (086 3122897) by January 31st.
